Biography

Born in 1989, François Bellabas is a French artist who lives and works between Paris and Los Angeles. He graduated from the École supérieure d’art de Lorraine (Metz, France) in 2012 and from the École nationale supérieure de la photographie (Arles, France) in 2015. He was nominated for the Robert Schuman Prize (Metz, France) in 2018. His work was also showcased in ART-O-RAMA art fair (Marseille, France) in 2017 and at the first edition of the Biennale de L’image Possible in 2018 (BIP, Liege, Belgium). 2019 was a year dedicated to improve the Motorstudies project with a 3 months art residency program at the Centre photographique d’île de France (CPIF) followed by a month-long trip to Los Angeles in October. The next one is scheduled for next February 2020.

Technophile and working as a kind of engineer, François Bellabas enjoys playing with the different levels of reality produced by and coming from the photography medium. Widely inspired by science fiction, his work represents a global experience that plays with the codified genres of the photography to question the physical values and different perceptions of the world. Trough his photographs and also his installations and videos, he creates visual experiences to show the relationship between reality and virtuality. Thereby he explores the fascinating ambiguity of our contemporary world's representation.

Co-founder of the creative studio “Gourau & Phong”, he develops through this interface commission work in the advertising industry and particularly in the formats that the web allows. Experimenting with his partner Benjamin Roulet different tools and workflow, they progress between 2D and 3D, still or in motion. Referring their experiments to photography and the values of time that images convey, they combine different levels of reality to explore their values of feelings.
